About

My name is Leonnie Dickens, welcome to my blog. I started this thing so that I had a reason and a place to write. The name Of Myself and The Universe comes from my belief that a blog's content should be more reflective of the author's personality than any particular theme. So, while I intend to post a lot of poetry here, I will also comment on things I see out in the world.

Now then, a few things about myself: I don't have a message, I have a rather large issue with modern rhyming poetry, I generally think of myself as being a pretty good writer, and I don't have a very high opinion of humanity at large.
  • I have no message. I don't have a stance on any particular issue, at least not one I feel like sharing in a poem. I don't write poems about things that are weighing heavily on my own soul. I'm just a guy who writes poetry because it seems a wonderful science to me. Physicists describe the universe with numbers and theories of motion, poets describe it with shadows and glorious phrasing.
  • The thing about rhyme is just that I generally don't see it being done well, though I find myself assaulted by a deluge of bad poems in general. (Nearly every time one of my Facebook pals posts a poem, it takes everything within me to not delete them/punch them in the throat the next time I see them. Social networking may have been the worst thing to happen to poetry since gangsta rap.)
  •  I am an English major. As such, I read a lot. I also am inspired/forced to write a lot, natch. Over the course of my 20+ years, I have had enough feedback to believe that I am pretty good at it. I also, however, have a healthy ego, so I'm constantly looking for a way to insure that my work is improving. Generally, I feel good enough to edit my own work, but occasionally I go to the small circle of people whose opinions I have come to trust over the years. (A strange digression, that)
  • I think most people are idiots. I am aware that I have above average intelligence, and common sense, but I see more signs that Americans in particular, are getting dumber by the second.
So that's a bit about my perspective, if you want to understand my personality, I think it's summed up in this: I watched the movie Independence Day so many times, that I was able to quote the entire movie verbatim. Oh and I like Pop Tarts.
